Soccer For Moms: game & parenting essentials for healthy kids

With more than three million youth soccer players in the United States, there are approximately an equal number of adults driving them to and from the field, too! As the popularity of soccer continues to boom, it's becoming a very common activity that can be a tool through which parents can share healthy life skills and attitudes with their school-age children. Soccer for Moms demystifies the rules of soccer for moms (and dads!) who may have never played the game themselves, and it provides useful instruction if they need to coach a game. Aside from actual rules of the game, “rules of life” are also shared and suggested in a friendly format. The book builds on the team-centered focus of soccer and also provides a wealth of useful information on improving kids' healthy life skills, such as nutrition, fitness, teamwork, relationships, discipline, sportsmanship, safety, and even fundraising. Parents will feel ready to "get in the game" when they're encouraged and empowered to share in their children's excitement by training and playing in their own leagues, as well as coaching and volunteering for their kids. This book fills a void in parenting information for normal, healthy school-age children and presents it in a comprehensive yet humorous guide to raising healthy soccer players from kindergarten to college.

Home and Away: One Writer's Inspiring Experience at the Homeless World Cup of Soccer

“Funny and illuminating and filled with soccer drama—this book is a win for the rest of us.”—CBC.ca
In 2008, Dave Bidini accompanies Homeless Team Canada to the Homeless World Cup—an annual street soccer tournament with goals unlike any other: the most important of which is to create life-changing opportunities for the millions of homeless people worldwide. In Melbourne, Australia, Bidini watches team members play and shares the disappointments, frustrations, joys, and triumphs of forty-five-year-old Billy, who is a former addict; the quick-footed twenty-four-year-old Moroccan immigrant Juventus, who refuses to talk about his past; and most of all, the endearing teenaged Krystal, who carries a photograph of her long-dead mother and dreams of a better life.

Bidini begins to understand what this tournament means to all those involved. He sees firsthand the power of sport to transform the lives of those on the edge—how the decision to play this game can mean the difference between survival and heading down a road of addiction, poverty, or crime. Home and Away offers a powerful look at the poor and dispossessed, from the barrios of Mexico City and the shanties of West Africa to the streets of North America and Europe, illuminating the renewed meaning that these players find in such an inspiring game.

National Pastime: How Americans Play Baseball And the Rest of the World Plays Soccer

In their innovative book, National Pastime, Stefan Szymanski and Andrew Zimbalist compare the histories and institutional structures of baseball—the U.S. national pastime—and soccer—the major sport in the rest of the world. Their indepth, cross-cultural assessment of these huge mega-businesses, particularly Major League Baseball and the English Premier League, examines what makes each sport successful and details how administrators in each can learn from the other. Since National Pastime was first published, Malcolm Glazer, the owner of an American football team, took over one of the biggest soccer clubs in the world; Major League Baseball staged the World Baseball Classic in imitation of the soccer World Cup; and the leading soccer clubs in Europe have threatened to form an independent league modeled after the U.S. major leagues. The updated paperback edition contains a new preface, which provides fresh insight into the ongoing globalization of these great national pastimes.

How To Play Soccer

I KNOW what you're thinking...."Who in the WORLD is Joe Hulme?" My first thoughts exactly!

I normally don't actively look for soccer training books. And, the ones that are offered to us by coaches and would-be authors are usually incredibly boring to say the least. So, when a friend suggested I check out a book titled, "How to Play Soccer" by a Joe Hulme, and written in 1952 in England, no less...my eyes rolled.

To be polite I scanned through the manual, without any real intention of reading it. While I was chuckling at the quaint spellings and odd Brit phrases that I've never heard before. I didn't notice for quite a while that I actually WAS reading it. I couldn't stop!

This is not a book of boring drills nor an ex-athlete thumping his chest and spinning yarns about the "good ole days"...it was actually a VERY readable book. And, while being very informative and thought provoking...it was throughly enjoyable!

How could this be? I immediately did some research and I found out that not only was Joe Hulme a champion player and team manager in England in the 30's and 40's, but a very popular sports writer for a top British newspaper!

It is SO interesting to read how controversial topics of his time are STILL hot topics of todays youth and major league players alike. Hulme was CONVINCED that the "off-sides" rule would be eliminated! And, gleefully rubbed his hands together waiting for that time to come.

Hulme discusses everything from the importance of team spirit and how to develop it...to why his players wore their soccer shoes until they, literally, fell to pieces on their feet during championship games.

I laughed out loud when Hulme got big-headed over kicking the winning goal at the last second, only to be brought to the carpet by his manager for "leaving his zone." Then, I was impressed at how Hulme questioned this "traditional" way of thinking and playing.

And, I was touched by Hulme's warm observation of how the best players seemed to come from the mining regions...they played harder than the others, because they didn't want to go back to work in the mines!

This manual is informative, inspiring, funny, thoughtful and very much FUN to read!

Ruben James, Publisher
FUNdamentalSoccer.com

The Science of Soccer

For the first time ever, science gives us the answers to questions like "what's the chance of a team that wins the League or Premiership also winning the Cup? Can you predict how many goals will be scored? What's the best height for footballers? Is the winning team the best team?" The Science of Soccer is a fascinating book, dealing with a wide range of subjects where scientific analysis can be applied to football. Starting with a qualitative description of the basic physics that relate to the ball and its bounce, the author then moves through kicks and throws to a simple account of the more complex physics of a ball in flight. Fulfilling your scientific curiosity, this book uncovers aspects of the game that are not normally discussed. It includes a look at game theory, how the rules affect the flow and enjoyment of the game, why the best team does not always win, unusual statistics about players, and an insight into the economics of the game.

The candid, revealing autobiography of soccer's greatest and most controversial star.
“Sometimes I think that my whole life is on film, that my whole life is in print. But it’s not like that. There are things which are only in my heart—that no one knows. At last I have decided to tell everything.”—Diego Maradona

A poor boy from a Buenos Aires shanty town, Diego Maradona became a genius with the soccer ball, kicking his way to the heights of South American, European, and world soccer, yet his struggles with the pressures of life inside and outside the game repeatedly threatened to tear him and his legend down. Hero or villain, one thing about Maradona is certain: He was the greatest soccer player of his generation—and perhaps of all-time. Never before has the legendary Maradona given us his extraordinary story in his own words—until now.

From his poverty-stricken origins to his greatest glories on the field, Maradona recounts, with astonishing frankness and brilliant insight, the pivotal moments of his life—the pressures of being a child prodigy, the infamous semi-final game against England in the 1986 World Cup, an incredible turn-around and the dream-turned-sour at Napoli, and the shame and disgrace of his positive drug test at USA 1994. In this amazingly honest autobiography, we see inside the mind of one of the most talented, controversial, and complex sportsmen of our times—a man torn between the demands of corporate club bosses, the fans, the media, and his own tempestuous personal life.

With a new epilogue exclusive to this paperback edition that brings Maradona’s remarkable story up-to-date and more than eighty wonderful photographs, Maradona is a confessional, a revelation, an apology, and a celebration. 20 color and 63 black-and-white photographs

The Beautiful Game : Sixteen Girls and the Soccer Season That Changed Everything

Once nobody noticed Santa Rosa's Thunder. They were a ragtag team of girls who wanted to play soccer, and no one took them seriously. Their male coach expected little from his "ladies, " and their mediocre performance convinced them he was right.

Then a kind of miracle happened. Emiria Salzmann, Thunder's new coach, a top player herself, knew what it took to win--discipline, relentless drills, thigh-burning sprints, and an inspired passing game. The girls hated it, but their coach never let up. Tough and determined, she showed them what it felt like to be winners--and they loved it. As the momentum grew with a string of victories, the girls thrived on the competition, believing they had the right stuff to become champions.

They were right! With spirits soaring, Thunder won its league on the last day of the season and headed for the state cup, emerging not just as powerful athletes but as strong, confident, emotionally healthy human beings--champions in the game of soccer, and in the game of life.

We now have three major sports, 3½ if you include hockey, mainly because of the advent of television in the 1960's and 70's. As strange as it may seem to us today, soccer as a professional sport was just as valid as baseball, basketball, and football for much of the first half of the twentieth century.

Brilliant range is a book about Dutch soccer that's not really about Dutch socer. It's more about an enigmatic way of thinking peculiar to a people whose landscape is unrelentingly flat, mostly below sea level, ad who owe their salvation to a boy who plugged a fractured dike with his little inger. If any one thing, Brilliant Orange is about Dutch space and a people whose unique conception of it has led to ome of the most enduring art, the weirdest architecture, and a bizarrely crebral form of soccer--Total Football--that led in 1974 to a World Cup finalsmatch with arch-rival Germany and more recently to a devastating loss againstSpain in 2010. With its intricacy and oddity, it continues to mystify and delght observers around the world. As David Winner wryly observes, it is an expression of the Dutch psyche that has a shaed ancestry with the Mondrian's Broadway Boogie Woogie, Rembrandt's Th Night Watch, maybe even with Gouda cheese.

Finally here in paperbck, Brilliant Orange reaches out to the reader from an unexpected place andnever lets go.
She was inspired to start the Afghan Youth Sports Exchange after September 11, 2001, and in the summer of 2004, she brought eight Afghan girls to the United States for a soccer clinic. Fifteen teams now compete in the Afghanistan Football Federation, with hundreds of girls participating.
In Kabul Girls Soccer Club, Awista tells both her own story and the moving stories of the eight original girls, how they found strength in each other, in teamwork, and in themselves--taking impossible risks to obtain freedoms we take for granted. This is a story about hope, home, and determination.

Winning at All Costs: A Scandalous History of Italian Soccer

The 2006 World Cup final between Italy and France was a down-and-dirty game, marred by French superstar Zidane's head-butting of Italian defender Materazzi. But viewers were also exposed to the poetry, force, and excellence of the Italian game; as operatic as Verdi and as cunning as Machiavelli, it seemed to open a window into the Italian soul. John Foot's epic history shows what makes Italian soccer so unique. Mixing serious analysis and comic storytelling, Foot describes its humble origins in northern Italy in the 1890s to its present day incarnation where soccer is the national civic religion. A story that is reminiscent of Gangs of New York and A Clockwork Orange, Foot shows how the Italian game — like its political culture — has been overshadowed by big business, violence, conspiracy, and tragedy, how demagogues like Benito Mussolini and Silvio Berlusconi have used the game to further their own political ambitions. But Winning at All Costs also celebrates the sweet moments — the four World Cup victories, the success of Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, the role soccer played in the resistance to Nazism, and the great managers and players who show that Italian soccer is as irresistible as Italy itself.

It is a matter of life and death for millions around the world, an international lingua franca.

Simon Kuper traveled to twenty-two countries to discover the sometimes bizarre effect soccer can have on politics and culture. At the same time he tried to discover what makes different countries play a simple game so differently.

Kuper meets a remarkable variety of fans along the way, from the East Berliner persecuted by the Stasi for supporting his local team, to the Argentine general with his own views on tactics. He also illuminates the frightening intersection between soccer and politics, particularly in the wake of the attacks of 9-11, where soccer is obsessed over by the likes of Osama bin Laden. The result is one of the world's most acclaimed books on the game, and an astonishing study of soccer and its place in the world.

Wherever you are on earth, it's only a matter of time before you come across children playing soccer. Another five minutes and you will probably find yourself having a ball rolled to your feet as an invitation to join in the game. Soccer is a common language and a culture shared: a joy, a passion, an escape, and an affirmation of identity understood and celebrated by children—and their parents—in every country around the globe.

For this unique collaborative project, soccer writer Tom Watt talked to the world's top players about growing up and falling in love with the game: Argentina's Lionel Messi and Brazil's Gilberto Silva; England's David James and Scotland's Craig Gordon; Italy's Fabio Cannavaro, Spain's Iker Casillas, and France's Franck RibÉry; South Africa's Benni McCarthy and Nigeria's Nwankwo Kanu; USA's Landon Donovan and Japan's Shunsuke Nakamura; and the world's most famous player, David Beckham.

A Beautiful Game tells their stories, in the players' own words—stories of boys who would grow up to be heroes for a new generation of young players and fans. They look back to their childhoods: to their family homes, to their schoolrooms, to the friends they grew up with, and to the places where they first played the game that has made them stars. The players' words are brought to life with over 160 full-color images that offer rare, emotive, and striking insights into childhood all over the world, and celebrate soccer's ability to touch the lives of children—and adults—wherever the beautiful game is played.

Five percent of the originating publisher's revenue from sales of the book worldwide will benefit selected UNICEF sports-related projects.

Documenting a complete history of the sport, this perceptive work also reflects on common criticisms, including the ways that soccer ferments nationalism, serves right-wing powers, and fosters competitiveness. Acknowledging these concerns, alternative perspectives on the game and practical examples of how to achieve egalitarian matches are explored. Serving as both as an orientation for the politically conscious football supporter and as an inspiration for those who try to pursue the love of the game away from television sets and big stadiums, this thoughtful examination reclaims the notion of soccer as “the people’s game.”

During the 2006 World Cup finals, Zidane stunned the country by ending his spectacular career with an assault on an Italian player. In Soccer Empire, Laurent Dubois illuminates the connections between empire and sport by tracing the story of World Cup soccer, from the Cup's French origins in the 1930s to Africa and the Caribbean and back again. As he vividly recounts the lives of two of soccer's most electrifying players, Zidane and his outspoken teammate, Lilian Thuram, Dubois deepens our understanding of the legacies of empire that persist in Europe and brilliantly captures the power of soccer to change the nation and the world.

Off The Post: A Season In High School Soccer In Rural America

“Their captain stood there in the middle of the circle with the ball by his feet while he observed the field. This was his moment of glory: The first player in school history to have possession of the soccer ball in a game. This probably felt like the highpoint of his soccer career and possibly his life to that point…. In less than three seconds his moment was over. Our midfielder had run up in the guy’s blindside, stretched out and drilled the soccer ball. His follow-through carried into the player and planted him into the ground… His shiny new jersey was covered in dirt as when he hit the ground the hot summer’s dust kicked up around him. Less than two minute later we scored.”

Out of all the levels of soccer in the United States, perhaps none is more baffling then high school soccer. Overshadowed by more popular sports and made redundant by club and select teams, in most places high school soccer seems a pointless endeavor and an example of Americans trying to force the “World’s Game” into American notions of sport. However, in Rural America high school fields are the only place the game can be experienced live. If soccer is going to grow out of it’s image as a suburban and immigrant sport, then rural America is going to have to come on board as well. Is Rural America really ready for soccer? Is soccer really ready for Rural America?

“Off The Post” is the true story of a ragtag group of atypical Bible Belt American teenagers (plus one secular humanist Norwegian exchange student) and their coach. The kids aren’t stereotypes but they have to manage their way through a society full of them. The kids don’t come from a long line of soccer pedigree. They don’t get to be local celebrities for playing (that honor goes to the basketball team), none of them will ever play college soccer, and they don’t spend their springs training with a select team to perfect their skills. In fact, most of them will never kick a soccer ball outside of the school season. Their coach is worried less about winning then he is interested in making a new generation of American soccer fans and creating a place where the kids are free to be themselves. As this is a real story, not some stereotypical fantasy by a hack Hollywood writer, the season won’t end in a miracle run to the State Championship. However, they are having fun and they are learning the beautiful game, which can be downright ugly at times. While they are growing into adulthood they also, like their nation, are growing into maturity as soccer fans. Just don’t expect them to act like adults all the time (or rarely at all).

“Off The Post” is a microcosm of the sport’s growth in America’s heartland. From a time just a few years ago when nobody seemed to know anything about soccer to a current attitude that says “Beware World, The Yanks Are Coming.” “Off The Post” also touches on what it means to be a rural American who has glimpsed what the rest of the world holds but chooses to live in their hometown despite despising some of the region’s mentality. The quirks of small town life are explored for each community the team will visit throughout the season, from a town commemorating the birth of the President of the Confederate States of America to a field that once graced baseball legends like Babe Ruth and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.

Rory Miller teaches in a rural high school and coached soccer for nine years. He is an avid reader of the English “Fan Lit” genre, and wants to see something like that develop here in America. This is his account of his final season coaching, a season full of highs and lows on the field while navigating a team full of “characters” in every sense of the word. In addition to his teaching credentials, he also has a Master’s Degree in History and is active in the online world of Soccer blogging.

Along the way, author Jonathan Wilson, an erudite and detailed writer who never loses a sense of the grand narrative sweep, takes a look at the lives of the great players and thinkers who shaped the game, and discovers why the English in particular have proved themselves so “unwilling to grapple with the abstract.” This is a modern classic of soccer writing that followers of the game will dip into again and again.

Whether it's called soccer, football, or the world's game, soccer is fun and has been deemed the most popular sport in the world. Soccer is about motion. Physics is about the laws of motion, and it can be applied to ball games. Combining soccer and physics is one way to appreciate the high-speed aspects of the sport. In The Physics of Soccer, author Deji Badiru introduces basic mathematics and science concepts in an interesting, useful, and engaging way to enhance how the game is played.
The Physics of Soccer teaches both players and coaches how to look at soccer in a new way-beyond the physical undertaking it represents-to understand the marvels of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics that give soccer its life, power, and thrills.
With a background as both a scientist and soccer coach, Badiru also examines the science behind game scenarios, field-based decisions, the geometry of field play, and strategies for assessing the implications of directional motions of opponents and teammates on the field. The Physics of Soccer is an essential resource for any team looking for an advantage that can make the difference between just playing, and winning.

The World Is a Ball: The Joy, Madness and Meaning of Soccer

Globe and Mail columnist John Doyle explores the international phenomenon of soccer

In A Great Feast of Light, John Doyle viewed his childhood in Ireland through the television screen. Now, he turns his eye to the most popular sport on the planet: soccer. It's a journey that begins with the first game John saw, in 1960s-era Ireland, through soccer in the 21st century - the World Cups in 02 and 06, the European Championships in 04 and 08. And Doyle has traveled the globe during the build-up to next year's World Cup 2010. In between the drunken fans, crazed taxi drivers, leprechauns and lederhosen, Doyle muses on the evolution of soccer as a global phenomenon. He shows a sport where for 90 minutes on the pitch anything seems possible. A game where colonized nations can tackle the power of their colonizers; where oppressed immigrant groups can thoroughly trounce their host countries. This book examines soccer from a new angle. John Doyle offers a compelling social history of the ultimate sport, each country and team competing in the historic 2010 World Cup, and how the game has kept pace as the global village has sprung up around the playing field.

All over the world, soccer is known as “the Beautiful Game” and is the most popular sport. But in the United States, professional soccer still has a hard time catching on.

It has had some successes here. The American Soccer League of the 1920s, Pélé and other international stars in the North American Soccer League’s glamorous 1970s, the indoor soccer phenomenon of the 1980s, and the U.S. women’s win in the Women’s World Cup of 1999 all hinted that the American public is ready to embrace pro soccer.

In its short history, Major League Soccer (MLS) has survived and even started to thrive, drawing steady crowds and loyal fans. In Long-Range Goals, Beau Dure profiles teams and players, including D.C. United, the Los Angeles Galaxy, Landon Donovan, Freddy Adu, and Coach Bruce Arena, who are all vital to MLS. Some of the triumphs include an expansion of the league and its ownership group, the contribution of MLS players to a strong U.S. World Cup showing in 2002, and the construction of soccer stadiums nationwide. At the same time, MLS has occasionally stumbled, during costly legal battles with players and seeing two teams fold, but its investors have remained strong, figured out how to make money, and support the league.

From the league’s formation in 1993 to the David Beckham era, this book reveals all the action on and off the pitch: the politics, the lawsuits, the management of its teams, and the savvy business deals that helped MLS rebound. It also revels in the big personalities of its stars, the grace of its utility players, and the obstacles the league faces in meeting its long-range goals.
D. Wetherell tells the true story of his high-school-age son's winning soccer season. Soccer Dad is simultaneously the candid reflections of a devoted father and the enthusiastic observations of a diehard soccer fan.

When Matt enters his senior year of high school, it is not without myriad parenting concerns on the part of his father, author W. D. Wetherell. What is his role in shaping his son's future? What will life be like when Matt is away at college? And what of Matt's soccer season?—Is Matt's success in soccer just setting him up for disappointment later in life? With the pensive eye of an artist, Wetherell follows his son's team from field to field and win to win and ruminates on topics ranging from soccer's esoteric appeal in America to the conflicting emotions of a parent sending his youngest child out into the world. Reflecting on his own experiences both as a participant and a spectator, Wetherell offers a paean to the sport of soccer and the joys of parenthood.

Offside: Soccer and American Exceptionalism.

Soccer is the world's favorite pastime, a passion for billions around the globe. In the United States, however, the sport is a distant also-ran behind football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. Why is America an exception? And why, despite America's leading role in popular culture, does most of the world ignore American sports in return? Offside is the first book to explain these peculiarities, taking us on a thoughtful and engaging tour of America's sports culture and connecting it with other fundamental American exceptionalisms. In so doing, it offers a comparative analysis of sports cultures in the industrial societies of North America and Europe.
The authors argue that when sports culture developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, nativism and nationalism were shaping a distinctly American self-image that clashed with the non-American sport of soccer. Baseball and football crowded out the game. Then poor leadership, among other factors, prevented soccer from competing with basketball and hockey as they grew. By the 1920s, the United States was contentedly isolated from what was fast becoming an international obsession.
The book compares soccer's American history to that of the major sports that did catch on. It covers recent developments, including the hoopla surrounding the 1994 soccer World Cup in America, the creation of yet another professional soccer league, and American women's global preeminence in the sport. It concludes by considering the impact of soccer's growing popularity as a recreation, and what the future of sports culture in the country might say about U.S. exceptionalism in general.
Then in 2006, he moved to London and discovered a new and baffling world—the renowned Premiership soccer league. Culpepper pledged his loyalty to Portsmouth, a gutsy, small-market team at the bottom of the standings. As he puts it, “It was like childhood, with beer.”

Writing in the vein of perennial bestsellers such as Fever Pitch and Among the Thugs, Chuck Culpepper brings penetrating insight to the vibrant landscape of English soccer—visiting such storied franchises as Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool . . . and an equally celebrated assortment of pubs. Bloody Confused! will put a smile on the face of any sports fan who has ever questioned what makes us love sports in the first place.
